Crater of diamonds State Park is the only site with a known diamond-bearing capacity that is open to the public. For a fee, visitors may search the thirty-seven-and-one-half-acre plowed field and keep what they find. Visitors may also find amethyst and jasper along with diamonds. A new addition to the park is an aqua playground, a museum for discovery, where visitors can get in-depth information on how to find diamonds, a hall of fame for diamond hunters, and other exhibits. The Diamond Discovery Center is a new exhibit that focuses on the history of diamonds and geology. It also includes examples of rocks you can look for in the crater.
Every June, the Diamond Festival celebrates the discovery of diamonds. The Crater of Diamonds State Park hosts a gem and mineral display and John Huddleston Day on separate dates. These events honor the man who discovered diamonds in the region.
Diamond John's Riverside Retreat was opened in June 2006, on the banks of the Little Missouri River, about one-and-a-half miles from Crater of Diamonds. There is a log bed and breakfast, tepees, and cottages for rent. You will find a small petting area, hot tubs, paddle boats, and kayaks, as well as areas to play sports.
