Three native sons from Lonoke County have been elected governors of Arkansas. They are James Philip Eagle, John Ellis Martineau, and Joseph Taylor Robinson. Robinson served ten years in Congress, and twenty-four in the U.S. Senate. From 1967 to 1971, Maurice Lee "Footsie", a native of Lonoke County, was Arkansas' lieutenant governor. Elsijane Trimble was the first woman to serve on the Arkansas Supreme Court. She also achieved other firsts.
The county's main economic resource is still agriculture. Cotton was the dominant crop until W. H. Fuller in 1904 proved that rice could still be grown on the same land. Soybeans were introduced to the county in 1940. The county also benefits from aquaculture, which provides economic growth.
