Conway County was created from a part of Pulaski County on October 20, 1825. It was named after Henry Wharton Conway who was the territorial delegate at the U.S. Congress.
Lewisburg was the county's seat from 1831 to 1883. The Little Rock and Fort Smith Railroad built tracks one mile north of Lewisburg in the year 1871. The proposed depot was named Morrilton in honor of farmer E. J. Morrill who had sold the land to them. The first people to move from Lewisburg, Missouri, to Morrilton began in 1880. In 1883, the county government was moved and the depot was constructed in 1910.
Conway County was much bigger at its creation. Van Buren County was formed from portions of Conway, Izard, and Independence counties. It was established on November 11, 1833. Conway County was the source of Perry County, which was formed on December 18, 1840. Faulkner County was formed from parts of Conway, Pulaski, and other counties on April 12, 1873.
