There are three theories as to the origin of Nome's "Nome" name. First, Jafet, a Norwegian immigrant, gave Nome its name. Nome is a toponym at several locations in Norway.
Another theory states that Nome was named after an error. It is alleged that Nome's name was created when a British cartographer copied an unclear annotation from a British officer while sailing up the Bering Strait. The officer had written "?" next to the unnamed cape. The officer had written "???? Name" beside the unnamed cape. The annotation was misunderstood as "C. Nome", Cape Nome.
The third possible origin of the name comes from a misinterpretation of the Inupiaq word "Where at?" ", Naami.
Some local merchants and miners voted to change Nome's name to Anvil City in February 1899. This was due to confusion with Cape Nome and the Nome River. The United States Post Office in Nome declined to accept the changes. The merchants were afraid of a move by the Nome City post office to Nome City, so they agreed to change Anvil City's name back to Nome.
