A memorial marker was erected in 1944 on the courthouse square in memory of the Denson Brothers – Seaborn M. Denson, and Thomas J. Denson, who devoted their lives to teaching and composing American religious folk music, as embodied by the Sacred Harp. It is located in most of the Southern States but mainly in Alabama. The "Dual Destiny", the statue was built in front of the courthouse in 1987. This statue depicts a confederate-Yankee soldier who represented Winston County's dual affiliation in the American Civil War. It shows how soldiers from the county fought for the Union and Confederate armies.
Despite having soldiers from both sides in Winston County, the county refused to separate from the union with the rest. This was the Republic of Winston, which is still a legend in Winston County.
