Winston County was created under the name Hancock County in February 1850 from the territory that used to be part of Walker County. It was named after John Hancock, the Governor of Massachusetts, and the famous signer of The American Declaration of Independence. Its county seat is Houston. The county was renamed Winston County in honor of the Alabama Governor on January 22, 1858. John A. Winston.
Winston County was a prominent part of the American Civil War. It gained attention because it opposed secession. The sentiment is so strong that it is sometimes called the Free State Winston. The area was home to few slaves, and it saw little benefit from secession. Today, the county uses its "Free State of Winston' reputation to attract tourists. In the novels To Kill a Mockingbird, and Addie Praise, the county's opposition against the Confederacy is briefly mentioned.
The county seat was moved to Double Springs in 1883 from Houston. This was to make it near the center of the county. Cullman County was formed from the eastern half of Winston County.
