Vernon was once known as Swayne Courthouse. It was named after General Wager Swayne Swayne, the head of the Freedman's Bureau. He served in the Chattahoochee State District. Many records from this period were lost when the courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1866. In 1868, the name of Vernon was changed to Vernon in honor of Edmund Vernon.
Vernon's economy was built on timber, agriculture, and mills, both before and after the Civil war. Many jobs were lost when the plantations were sold to timber interests after the Civil War. Vernon has seen a lot of manufacturing since the end of Reconstruction. In the early 20th century, there were textile factories. These textile factories are no longer in existence. Marathon, an international manufacturer of trash compactors, is one of the few remaining manufacturers.
