Jones County, Alabama, was created on February 4, 1867, with land from the southern portion of Marion County as well as the western part Fayette County. It was named after E. P. Jones, Fayette County's county seat. On November 13, 1867, this county was disbanded. The area was reorganized into a county on October 8, 1868. However, Covington County was renamed "Jones County" in the same year. Sanford was created to honor H. C. Sanford from Cherokee County. The county was renamed Lamar on February 8, 1877, in honor of Senator L.Q.C. Lamar, Mississippi.
