On December 22, 1824, Dale County was created. The original area included all of Coffee County and Geneva County as well as the "panhandle” portion of Houston County. Although the original county seat was at Dale's Court House in Dublin, it was moved to Newton after Coffee County split with Dale in 1841. It remained here until 1870 when it was moved to Newton. A small part of Dale County's southeast was added to Houston County in 1903.
The 15th Regiment of Alabama Infantry was formed in Dale County. All of Co. "E", and part of Co. "H," were made up of Dale County residents. This unit is best known for its confrontation with the 20th Maine at the Little Round Top on July 2, 1863. Despite numerous ferocious attacks, the 15th was unable to dislodge Union troops and was forced to retreat following a desperate bayonet attack by Col. Joshua L. Chamberlain, the 20th Maine's commander. In Ronald F. Maxwell’s 1993 film Gettysburg, this assault was vividly reconstructed. The 15th continued to serve until Lee's army was defeated at Appomattox Court House, in 1865.
