Ozark is the principal urban area of the Ozark Micropolitan Statistical Area. It also forms part of the Dothan-Ozark Combined Statistical Area. Ozark was originally a part of the Enterprise-Ozark micropolitan area before being split, and for a long while was originally part of the Dothan-Enterprise-Ozark combined statistical area but Enterprise is now its own separate primary statistical area in later censuses. Fort Rucker is the Army Aviation's primary flight training facility.
The original inhabitants of the Ozark region were the Muscogee. Ozark was named after a visitor who saw the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas.
John Merrick, Sr., who was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, was the first European to settle in Ozark. Merricks was the name of the town in honor of him. Later, it was changed to Woodshop when the town got its post office. In 1855, the first time that the name Ozark appeared was when citizens asked for a change of name.
The county seat was relocated from Newton to Ozark in 1870.
Three sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Ozark: The Claybank Log Church and the Samuel Lawson Dowling House.
