A sickly and bedraggled puppy wandered into Rockford in 1993. Residents of Rockford nursed Fred back to health. Fred became the town's mascot for the next ten decades.
Fred was first known for his regular newspaper column "A Dog's Life", which covered his adventures and encounters. He then gained national attention when he was featured on Animal Planet cable TV.
Fred, who was bitten by an animal in his stomach, died on December 23, 2002, at a Birmingham animal hospital. He was buried in front of the town's former jailhouse. In May 2003, a Montgomery businessman donated a full-size marker for his grave. Fred was inducted into the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association Animal Hall of Fame, in 2004.
2014 saw the film made into a documentary called Fred: The Town Dog.
