Coosa County can be found in the eastern central part of Alabama. Rockford is the county seat. Its name is derived from Rockford, a community of Creek people, and the Coosa River that forms one of its county borders.
Coosa County is included in the Talladega-Sylacauga, AL Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Birmingham-Hoover-Talladega, AL Combined Statistical Area.
It was formed from parts of Montgomery and Shelby counties on December 18, 1832. It was given a small portion of Montgomery County in 1837, and it lost some to the south with the creation of Elmore County in 1866.
