The first European Americans to settle in this area were the Michael Dixon family, who arrived around 1816. It was the traditional territory of the Chickasaw people. The settlement made the trade with Chief Tucumseh to obtain the Tuscumbia Valley and built their home at its head. They were joined by other settlers, and they created a village called the Big Spring Community. The community's men requested that the state legislature create a city. Ococoposa was a Chickasaw term that means 'dry watermelon'. It was established as a town in 1820. It is one of the oldest towns in Alabama. It was renamed Big Spring in 1821 and Tuscumbia on December 22, 1822.
Despite the fact that the Tennessee River was almost impassible due to the shoals, the federal road built in 1820 gave the area good access to the markets. Soon, Tuscumbia was the main center of agriculture in northern Alabama. In 1832, a line was built to Tuscumbia via the Tuscumbia Courtland and Decatur Railroad. By 1850, Tuscumbia was a major rail hub in the South.
