Colbert County was once part of the Cherokee and Chickasaw territories for hundreds of centuries. The Chickasaw people are the first known inhabitants. There were many cultures that existed before them, including those of native peoples who built seasonal villages and settled in the area for thousands of years.
The 1810s saw the first settlers settle in the area near the crossroads of Leighton, Alabama. Colbert County was established in the Reconstruction period, which began after the American Civil War. It was founded on February 6, 1867. It was split from Franklin County by the state legislature over political issues. Eight months later, it was dismantled by an Alabama constitutional convention on November 29, 1867. It was then reinstituted by the legislature on February 24, 1870.
The eastern boundary of Colbert County changed from County Line Road to Town Creek in 1890. This resulted in all of Leighton being included within Colbert County. Colbert County is home to Ivy Green. This is where Helen Keller was born. Colbert County also includes Sheffield and Muscle Shoals. These cities are home to many British and American musicians such as Aretha Franklin, the Rolling Stones, and others.
Colbert County also has the Key Underwood Coondog Memorial Graveyard, which was established in 1937. This area was home to Coon dogs, which were trained and bred for hunting.
