A white woman named Mrs. Crow gave birth in 1910 to a child of doubtful color. Many believed that the child was the result of a relationship between Crow, an African American, or both. She initially denied the allegations, but she eventually admitted to it under intense peer pressure. Crow answered the question, "Who raped me?" and gave the name Grant Richardson to them. Richardson was an African American living near the Braehead Mine Camp, northeastern Centreville. Richardson was so outraged by the incident that local miners and residents decided to seek "summary revenge" on him as soon as they learned that he had been captured by the sheriff.
On October 12, 1910, Deputy Sheriff Cam Riley captured Richardson and was about to return him to Centreville for processing. But, a mob attacked and robbed him. Richardson was taken from Riley by the mob and they shot him. Chief Deputy Sheriff Charles Oakley investigated immediately after hearing about the incident. However, other than the body and the shells, there was very little evidence or witnesses. Although a coroner's inquiry was conducted as soon as a special Coroner was appointed to the case, there is no known outcome. This was the first lynching that was recorded in Bibb County.
Crow is not yet charged with false charges resulting from murder or miscegenation. However, Richardson's friends and family know that Richardson had lived in the vicinity for many years. Richardson was well-respected in the community before the incident.
