Cahawba County, which was founded on February 7, 1818, and named after the Cahawba River, was created on February 7, 1818. The name Cahawba County comes from the Choctaw word for "water above". It was renamed Bibb County on December 4, 1820.
The state legislature passed laws in the wake of the American Civil War to create a new constitution. This created barriers to voter registration and effectively excluded Freedmen from the political process. Many residents opposed the Union occupation goals during and after Reconstruction, as they wanted to restore Antebellum political and social norms. Bibb and Dallas counties had the third-highest number of lynches in the state during this period of transition. Jim McMillan was killed by a White mob on June 18, 1919. Bibb County voted no to a proposed amendment to Alabama’s constitution to repeal the ban on interracial marriages.
