I have had the pleasure of having Brendan Sweeney both as a colleague and as my attorney for many years. I don’t normally write reviews for anything, but hiring an attorney is one of the most important decisions a person can make so I felt the need to do this. I think there are three things that make Brendan an excellent attorney. First is experience. He has gone toe-to-toe with lawyers of all kinds. Whether he needs to respond to a complex legal argument from a large international law firm or deal with a shady opposing counsel’s tricks, Brendan handles it with poise. Second is empathy. Brendan genuinely cares about his clients. There are many lawyers and law firms out there who claim to do this, but they will often pass you off to legal assistants, paralegals, or receptionists, and hardly return your calls. Brendan takes the time to communicate with his clients and understands how their particular legal issues affect their lives. Third is professionalism. Not only does Brendan fight for his clients, he does it in a way that earns the respect of judges and other attorneys. This translates into better outcomes for his clients and is something he has earned over years of practicing law. If you are wondering whether to hire Brendan as your attorney, I for one can strongly recommend him.

I had the good fortune of finding Mr. Sweeney when looking for an attorney to represent me in a dispute, and I can recommend him without hesitation. He is everything you would want from an attorney - knowledgeable, responsive, pragmatic and most importantly, motivated to obtain the best result for his client. He answers all questions and explains things in a way you can understand; and ultimately develops and implements a plan to accomplish your objectives. I would absolutely hire Mr. Sweeney for any future legal needs.

There is no better litigation attorney in South Florida. Brendan Sweeney knows the law inside and out, really believes in what he does, and is an incredible attoney. Mr. Sweeney's team works hard, does excellent work, and cares about the people they represent. Highly recommended.

I found myself embroiled in a fee dispute with an unscrupulous law firm based in the Fort Lauderdale area. I had engaged their services to defend me in a Commercial Foreclosure case, only to discover they made no effort to advocate for my interests and presented me with an exorbitant bill. In my search for resolution, I turned to Mr. Sweeney for assistance. Mr. Sweeney not only provided invaluable support throughout the fee dispute but also took the time to elucidate numerous complexities involved in the negotiations. His professionalism shone brightly, demonstrating a keen understanding of navigating intricate negotiations and discerning when to engage in conflict rather than negotiation. I can unequivocally attest that if you seek legal representation that is both ethical and fiercely committed to defending your rights, Mr. Sweeney and his firm are the epitome of what you need in your corner. Don't hesitate to enlist Mr. Sweeney's services; he was a beacon of hope during my ordeal and offered indispensable assistance during trying times. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Sweeney for his invaluable support.

I have known Brendan and been familiar with his high quality of lawyering for at least a decade and a half now. From the very first matter we collaborated on (as adverse counsel form different law firms) Brendan has always possessed the utmost level of legal acumen, professionalism and simple kindness. These are the ingredients for success and longevity in a legal career, and Brendan has only grown in these qualities over the years. I wholeheartedly recommend him and his firm.

AAL general personal injury Frequently Asked Questions

What is personal injury law?

Personal injury law encompasses legal remedies and defenses involved in civil lawsuits brought as a result of wrongful conduct. It covers situations where someone's negligence or intentional actions cause harm to another person. Personal injury law allows injured individuals to seek compensation for their losses, including medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. This area of law often involves cases such as car accidents, slip and falls, medical malpractice, and defective product injuries.

What is compensation for a personal injury claim?

Compensation for a personal injury claim typically includes monetary damages intended to compensate the injured party for their losses. This compensation can cover various aspects such as medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, lost wages or income, property damage, and pain and suffering. The goal is to provide financial relief to the injured person and help them recover from the physical, emotional, and financial impact of their injuries.

Is emotional distress a personal injury?

Emotional distress can be considered a personal injury under certain circumstances. In legal terms, emotional distress refers to the psychological impact of an injury or traumatic event, such as anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While it may not always involve physical harm, emotional distress can still be compensable in a personal injury claim if it can be linked to the defendant's actions or negligence.

What percentage do most personal injury lawyers take?

Most personal injury lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, which means they only get paid if they successfully recover compensation for their clients. Typically, personal injury lawyers take a percentage of the final settlement or court award as their fee. The percentage varies but commonly ranges from 33% to 40% of the total recovery. This arrangement allows injured individuals to pursue legal action without upfront costs and ensures that attorneys are motivated to achieve favorable outcomes for their clients.

How long does a personal injury lawsuit take?

The duration of a personal injury lawsuit can vary significantly depending on various factors, including the complexity of the case, the extent of the injuries, and the court's schedule. Some cases may be resolved through settlement negotiations relatively quickly, while others may take months or even years to reach a resolution, especially if they go to trial. Additionally, factors such as gathering evidence, conducting discovery, and waiting for medical treatment to conclude can influence the timeline of a personal injury lawsuit.

What is an example of a serious injury claim?

An example of a serious injury claim could involve catastrophic injuries that result in long-term or permanent disabilities, such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries leading to paralysis, severe burns, or limb amputations. These types of injuries often have significant and lasting effects on the victim's physical, emotional, and financial well-being, requiring extensive medical treatment, rehabilitation, and ongoing care. Serious injury claims typically seek substantial compensation to cover these extensive damages and provide for the victim's future needs.

What is compensation for a loss or injury?

Compensation for a loss or injury refers to the financial recovery awarded to an injured party in a legal proceeding. This compensation aims to restore the injured person to the position they were in before the injury occurred to the extent possible. It can include economic damages, such as medical expenses and lost wages, as well as non-economic damages for pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life. The goal of compensation is to help the injured individual recover physically, emotionally, and financially from the consequences of their injury.

What is the highest personal injury settlement?

The highest personal injury settlement or verdict can vary greatly depending on the specific circumstances of the case, including the severity of the injuries, the extent of the damages, and the jurisdiction where the case is tried. Settlements and verdicts in personal injury cases have reached into the tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars in some instances, particularly in cases involving catastrophic injuries, medical malpractice, or wrongful death. However, there is no fixed limit on the amount of compensation that can be awarded in a personal injury case, as each case is evaluated based on its unique factors and the applicable laws and precedents.
