Y.C. "Trey" Smith received his doctorate of jurisprudence from the University of Texas School of Law in 1986 and moved to New York after graduation. He worked as an Assistant District Attorney for Rensselaer County District Attorney James B. Canfield from 1987 to 1989, and as his Chief Assistant District Attorney in 1990 and 1991. For the next year, he served as Confidential Law Clerk to newly-elected New York Supreme Court Justice Canfield.
From 1993 to 1999, Trey was a name partner in Delaney & Smith, an Albany litigation firm handling personal injury cases. During this time he also worked for two years as Town Attorney for the Town of Hoosick. For the next five years, he worked with the Dallas, Texas office of Roger G. Worthington, P.C., a law firm representing people from across the nation with mesothelioma and other asbestos-related cancers. In 2004, he returned to New York and with J Hernandez, III founded Smith Hernandez LLC.
