My husband I first met Doug during a consultation we had with him in March 2019 about my Green Card application. The consultation lasted one hour and cost $300. At the time, I was very happy with Doug's friendliness and knowledge. Doug shared with us some advice about the general process but told us that due to liability, he could only help us with the application if his office handled the whole process, for a fee of $3000. It was a tough decision but in the end we decided to complete the application ourselves.Fast forward a few months later: my husband and I were suddenly in a panic about an aspect of our application, which ultimately turned out not to be a big deal--but of course we didn't know that at the time. Given our positive experience with Doug and the fact that he knew our case, I put in a phone call asking if we could have a consultation with him about this issue. I don't think I explicitly mentioned paying him, but I felt this was implied by the term "having a consultation." I certainly did not expect him to supply information for free; I was happy to pay for his time and expertise. When he didn't call back after several days, I left another voicemail. That too was not returned.I don't know that I thought much about this at the time, especially since the issue ended up resolving itself. But then just recently the whole experience repeated itself. We had some questions about covid and travel, which we couldn't find answers for online and wanted legal advice for. So again, I called Doug's office, thinking of him as someone who could help. His secretary forwarded me to his answering machine, which she said he checks daily. I once again left a message asking if we could schedule an appointment to consult with him about this issue, and once again heard nothing back. It has now been three weeks, and I'm assuming I will not be receiving a call back. One missed phone call would be completely understandable, but it's hard to explain multiple unreturned phone calls on different occasions as anything other than deliberate. I find it hard to interpret this any other way than that his initially helpful demeanor was contingent on his expectation that we would spend substantial amounts of money with him. Consultations in which he was being paid $300 for an hour of his time were so beneath him that he couldn't even be bothered to inform me of this fact and allowed me instead to waste my time continuing to reach out instead of looking for someone who was actually willing to help. I don't expect anything for free, but I think it's sad if the only options being made available to people are forking out thousands of dollars to have the lawyers do everything for you or getting zero legal help. The whole experience smacked of greed and left an extremely bad taste in my mouth.
