I began my career as a tax lawyer in 1984 with fourteen years as an IRS Chief Counsel attorney and Special Assistant US Attorney. In 1998, I entered private practice with the Portland firm of Greene & Markley, where I developed and managed a tax controversy and bankruptcy group that handled many of the largest and most complex tax cases in Oregon. I left G&M for solo practice in 2009, and was joined by Alexis Weyers in 2017. Over many decades as a tax lawyer, I have handled most types of federal and Oregon tax audit and collection controversies. I have taught extensively for both the IRS and for the Oregon State Bar and tax professional societies of Oregon. I have served as a tax expert witness or consultant for other law firms several dozen times. I have held a Martindale-Hubbell AV rating since 1999 and have been selected for inclusion in Oregon Super Lawyers since 2012 in the fields of bankruptcy and debtor-creditor law, and in Best Lawyers in America in the field of tax controversy since 2010. I was selected as Best Lawyers' 2014 Litigation and Controversy "Tax Lawyer of the Year" for Portland, Oregon.
