Manchester, the area now known as Manchester was once the camping ground of a small group of peaceful Native Americans called the Podunk tribe. Colonists settled the area in 1673, 40 years after Thomas Hooker led a group of Puritans from Massachusetts Bay Colony into founding Hartford.
It was originally known as Orford Parish at the time. This name can still be seen on the town's memorial to Revolutionary soldiers. The town quickly developed into an industrial hub thanks to its many rivers and streams. Hartford was once comprised of the land that is now home to East Hartford, Manchester, and West Hartford. East Hartford was established in 1783 as a separate city and included Manchester within its boundaries until 1823.
