The area that runs along the Mississippi River valley has been occupied for a long time by various cultures of indigenous peoples. This area was largely controlled by Chickasaw in historic times. The Chickasaw are thought to be the descendants of the Mississippian culture that established complex and fortified cities. Cahokia was the largest, and it was active between 950CE and the 15th century. It was located on the east bank of the Mississippi, in southern Illinois. It is roughly at the same latitude as St. Louis, Missouri.
The Shelby County region was one of the lands that the United States government acquired from Chickasaw under the Jackson Purchase of 1818. European-American immigrants established Shelby County in 1819. It was named after Isaac Shelby, former governor of Kentucky, who helped to negotiate the land acquisition. The county seat was originally located on the Wolf River in Raleigh, Tennessee, from 1827-1868. The seat was moved to Memphis in 1868, following the American Civil War. This was due to the importance of Memphis to the state's economy.
