The Ohio government approved the creation of Franklin County on March 30, 1803. In its original form, the county was part of Ross County. The county was named in Benjamin Franklin's honor by residents. Franklin County's Columbus was made the state capital of Ohio in 1816. The city was laid out by surveyors in 1812. Officials incorporated it in 1816. Although Columbus wasn't Ohio's first capital, the state legislature moved the state government to Columbus after it was temporarily located at Chillicothe or Zanesville. Because of its central position within Ohio and easy access to major transportation routes, Columbus was chosen as the new capital. It was chosen by the legislature over several other contenders, including Delaware, Franklinton, and Dublin.
