About Columbus, Ohio

At the city's 1812 founding, Columbus was given its name after Christopher Columbus (15th-century Italian explorer). It is the most populous city in the world named after the explorer. He sailed to the Americas and settled there for Isabella I. Castile and Spain. While there is no clear history of Columbus' connection to Ohio or the city before its founding, the book Columbus: The Story of a City reveals that a local lawmaker and resident admired Columbus enough to convince other legislators to name Columbus.

Historians have criticized Columbus since the 20th century for his role in the European conquest. They also criticized him for the abuse, enslavement, and subjugation that he caused. The 1990s saw attempts to get rid of symbols that were associated with the explorer. Many petitions were filed calling for the city's renaming amid the George Floyd protests of 2020.
