According to the school's website, the Alexandria high school, Va. was named after Thomas Chambliss Williams who was a well-known "supporter of segregation and a man who tried everything possible to slow down integration in Alexandria."
Alexandria consolidated all its high schools into T.C. Williams High School. Herman Boone, a Black football coach at the school, worked to integrate the team amid racial tensions. Washington was the star of the dramatized biographical movie "Remember The Titans", which was made in 2000. Boone, 84, died December 18, 2019.
The film's release brought renewed attention to the 1971 team and made the high school a significant landmark in the fight for racial equity. Barack Obama held a rally at the school during his 2008 bid for the Democratic nomination for president.
