Shreveport was established in 1836 by Shreve Town Company. This corporation was formed to develop a community at the junction of the newly navigable Red River, and the Texas Trail. The Texas Trail is an overland route that leads into the Texas' newly independent Republic of Texas.
This trail crossed Mexico before Texas became independent. It grew over the 20th century and became a major center of the national oil industry after the discovery of oil in Louisiana. The city was home to Standard Oil of Louisiana, which was absorbed by Standard Oil of New Jersey. It is now part of ExxonMobil. United Gas Corporation and Standard Oil of Louisiana were both headquartered there until the 1960s. The city was hit hard by declining employment, poverty, and drug abuse, as well as the closing of Shreveport Operations, a General Motors automobile factory. However, the city continues in its efforts to revitalize its infrastructure, revive the economy through diversification, and lower crime. Despite all these efforts, the city saw the highest number of homicides recorded in its history in 2021. This surpassed the 1993 record.
