Washoe County, which was a Republican stronghold in the late 20th century, voted only once for the Democratic candidate between 1944 and 2004. It has become more competitive since the 1990s. In 1988, it was a 22-point victory for George H. W. Bush. By 1992, it was only three points. The margin of victory for the Republican candidate was greater than four points from 1996 to 2004. Barack Obama won it in 2008 by 12 points. Since then, the county has voted Democratic in presidential elections. However, these margins are quite narrow. The majority of county seats are still held by Republicans in the state legislature. Reno and Sparks are the most Democratic areas in the county, while the rest is more Republican.
The elected five-member Board of County Commissioners governs the county. An appointed county manager is also in place. They serve four-year terms and are staggered. Three of them are elected during midterm elections, while two others are elected during presidential elections.
