Providence was one of the most wealthy cities in America by the 1900s. One of the largest national industrial manufacturing centers was powered by immigrant labor. The major producer of industrial products in Providence included steam engines, precision tools, silverware, screws, and textiles. Brown & Sharpe was home to the Corliss Steam Engine Company and Babcock & Wilcox. Nicholson File, the Grinnell Manufacturing Company, the Gorham Manufacturing Company, the Gorham Manufacturing Company, and the Fruit of the Loom were all examples of giant companies based in Providence.
Between 1975 and 1982, $606 Million of national and local community development funds were invested in the city. The city was active in revitalization efforts during the 1990s. They realigned the north-south railroad tracks and removed the large rail viaduct that separated Downtown and the capitol building. Waterplace Park and river walks were created along the banks of the rivers.
