Providence County was established on June 22, 1703, as the County of Providence Plantations. It was composed of five towns: Warwick, Warwick, Westerly, and Kingstown. It also included territory in the present-day Washington and Kent counties. Washington County was divided into King's County in 1729 and Kent County in 1750. When the final border with Massachusetts was established in 1862, the town of Cumberland from Massachusetts was purchased and was added to Providence County in 1746–47. The towns of East Providence were also made part of Providence County.
In 1842, Rhode Island abolished county government. Like other Rhode Island counties, Providence County does not have any governmental functions.
