About Bell County, Texas

Bell County was established in 1850 and named after Texas Governor Peter Hansborough Bell. There were 600 whites and 60 slaves at the time. Belton became the county seat in 1851.

In 1859, the last Indian raid on the area was committed. With 1860 resurveys of the line connecting Bell and Milam Counties, Bell County took its current boundaries.

The county voted to secession from the Union in 1861. The war caused division among residents, and many yeomen farmers were against it. Union sympathizers, Confederate deserters, and others hid in "Camp Safety" from 1862 to 1865. New social movements emerged after the war. Martha McWhirter founded the Belton Women's Commonwealth in 1867. It was the first Central Texas women's movement. This group offered shelter for women who were in abusive relationships.
