More about Shelby County, Alabama

On February 7, 1818, Shelby County was created. It was named after Isaac Shelby, a Revolutionary War hero who was also the first Governor of Kentucky. The first county seat was established at Shelbyville in 1820. This long-defunct settlement was found within the current city limits of Pelham. The logs were used to build the first courthouse. In 1826, the seat was moved to Columbia. The seat was originally housed in an older school building. A new brick courthouse building was built in 1854. The Shelby County Museum and Archives now call it the Old Shelby County Courthouse. It was constructed in limestone from 1905 to 1906 at a cost of $300,000.

Shelby County has a rich agricultural history. Since 1990, Shelby County has been a major location for soybean cultivation. Soybeans have become more important than cotton in Shelby County.

Shelby County was home to an early inland waterway, The Coosa River. It was also where an early east-west railroad was built in Alabama. This railroad connected Atlanta, Georgia with areas to its west. The Louisville and Nashville Railroad, an early north-south railroad that linked Louisville, Nashville, and Decatur with Birmingham and Montgomery, also passed through Shelby County.

The advent of the automobile and truck made Shelby County easily crossable from north to south via U.S. Highway 31. This major highway followed the same route as the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. U.S. Highway 231 was extended to the eastern portion of Shelby County, and U.S. Highway 280 followed.

In 1965, Interstate Highway 65 was built through Shelby County. Access to modern transportation systems was an important factor in the growth of Shelby County. Interstate 65 and U.S. Highway 31 provide strong connections between Shelby County and Jefferson County to its north. This has led to suburban development in places like Pelham, Helena, and Alabaster.
