Hampton is a historic city located in the southeastern corner of Virginia, situated on the Chesapeake Bay. Its strategic location has made it an important military and naval hub throughout American history, especially with the presence of Langley Air Force Base and the NASA Langley Research Center. Hampton is also home to Fort Monroe, which played a critical role during the Civil War.
One of the most interesting aspects of Hampton’s history is its connection to the "Contraband of War" decision during the Civil War, which allowed enslaved people who escaped to Union lines to remain free. This decision was made at Fort Monroe, leading it to become known as “Freedom’s Fortress.” Hampton University, one of the country’s oldest historically Black universities, was founded in the city in 1868.
Famous residents include jazz legend and Hampton native, Ella Fitzgerald, who grew up in the city. Hampton has also been a site of numerous air and space research breakthroughs due to the proximity of NASA’s facilities.
