On December 13, 2019, the city of Tuscaloosa celebrated 200 years of existence. Officials held various commemorative events and dedications throughout the city. These included the display of a "bicentennial Quilt" and fireworks after the 44th Annual West Alabama Christmas Parade. The University of Alabama donated two sculptures to the city. One was a statue of Minerva, a Roman goddess, standing 30 feet tall and weighing in at 9,500 pounds, which Caleb O'Connor designed. The other sculpture is The Walkway. The Tuscaloosa200.com website states that the Walkway is a replica of the Black Warrior River's route from Demopolis to Tuscaloosa. It traces milestones in the city's existence, survival, and its twists, turns, ebbs, and flows have mirrored the city's past. Craig R. Wedderspoon, a sculptor, and an architect created it.
A time capsule sealed hermetically was placed under a boulder near Manderson Landing. The capsule is meant to record "What was Tuscaloosa like in 2019?" It will be unveiled on the 250th anniversary of the city, December 13, 2069.
