Rutherford County was contested due to its central location and close proximity to Nashville during Civil War. One of the most bloody battles of the war was fought in the county, the Battle of Stones River. It was fought between December 31 1862 and January 2, 1863.
Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest led a series of cavalry operations on July 13, 1862. These operations were known locally as Forrest’s Raid. All Union forces in the area were forced to surrender after the raid was a success. Union troops quickly returned to the area shortly after his departure and held it until the end.
