Prattville was established in 1839 by Daniel Pratt, an industrialist, and architect. Pratt, who was born in Temple, New Hampshire, first noticed Autauga Creek back in the 1830s. At $21.00 per acre, he purchased 1,000 acres from Joseph May and began to build his manufacturing facilities as well as the town on the Autauga Creek banks. Because the creek was able to supply electricity to the equipment used in the manufacturing of cotton gin, the location was chosen. It quickly grew into an industrial hub. It was named the county seat of Autauga County in 1868.
Prattville has several historic sites, including the Daniel Pratt Historic District and Bell House.
