About the Nebraska Legal System

There is one federal court in Nebraska. A state supreme court and a state court. Trial courts have both limited and general jurisdiction.

The merit selection process, specifically assisted appointment, is used to select Nebraska state court judges. The term of appointment for judges is three years. If they want to continue on the court, they will need to stand for retention at the next general election. The terms that follow last six years.

The United States District Court for the District of Nebraska is Nebraska's federal district court. Appeals from this court can be heard at the U.S. Court of Appeals, 8th Circuit.

The Nebraska Supreme Court was established in 1875 and currently has seven judgeships. Michael Heavican is the current chief of court. The court decided on 303 cases in the fiscal year 2018.

Six judges were appointed by Republican governors to the court, while one was appointed by a Democratic governor.

The Nebraska Court of Appeals serves as the intermediate appellate court. It was created by a constitutional amendment in September 1991 and is located primarily at the Nebraska State Capitol, Lincoln. The court has six judges. The court of appeals judges are selected from the same districts as the supreme court justices.

Nebraska has 12 district courts. These courts cover one or more counties and have broad jurisdiction over criminal and civil cases. They can also hear appeals from county courts.

About Nebraska

Nebraska is made up of two main land regions: The Great Plains and Dissected Till Plains. The state's largest cities, Omaha (and Lincoln) are located in the Dissected Till Plains. It is made up of gently rolling hills. The Great Plains region of Nebraska is made up mainly of the treeless prairie. There are two main climatic zones in Nebraska. The state's eastern third has a humid continental climate. A unique warmer subtype, called "warm-temperate", is found near the southern plains.

This subtype is similar to the climates in Kansas and Oklahoma which have a predominantly humid subtropical climate. The climate is primarily semi-arid in the Panhandle and other areas near Colorado. There are wide variations in winter and summer temperatures within the state. These variations decrease as you move south. Tornadoes and violent thunderstorms are most common in spring and summer, but can also occur in autumn. Chinook winds tend to heat the state in winter and early spring.
