Madera was made the county seat for the newly formed Madera County in 1896. Construction began on a new county park, jail, zoo, and courthouse in the same year. The first Chamber of Commerce was established in March 1898. Forty-nine men paid $2.50 charter membership dues.
Madera quickly moved into the 20th Century and continued to grow. The main area of the town was three blocks in length. Madera became a city on March 27, 1907. These three blocks, along with the rest of Yosemite Avenue, were filthy and billowing in summer and thick with mud in winter. There were many wooden sidewalks that provided relief from the dirt.
Rosenthal-Kutner grocery store, located at Yosemite corner with E Street sold general merchandise, including everything from a pockethandkerchief to a harness, as well as groceries. Franchi's Grocery was also a Franchi's Grocery and Rochdale. The swinging door at the corner of Yosemite and D was Lacy Robertson’s Saloon. It was one of the 14 saloons along Yosemite Avenue, depending on which report you to read. Two banks were located on the same block: First National Bank at one end and Commercial Bank at the other.
