The city was established in 1821 to be the new capital of the state. It is named after General Andrew Jackson who was honored for his participation in the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812 and later served as president of the United States. The siege of Jackson began in 1863, following the Battle of Vicksburg. This was during the American Civil War. Union forces under General William Tecumseh Sherman started the siege.
After a speculative natural-gas boom in the area, Jackson became the most populous state city. The city's current slogan is "The City with Soul". The city has been home to many musicians from blues, gospel, and folk music, as well as jazz.
Jackson is the center of the Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. Because four northern Mississippi counties are part of the Memphis Metropolitan Area, it is the state's second-largest metropolitan area.
