Hartford County was created in 1714 to manage all unincorporated territory from the towns of Windham and Coventry, northeastern Connecticut, to the Massachusetts border. Windham County was created in 1726. Hartford County lost the towns of Ashford, Coventry, and Mansfield. The jurisdiction of Northwestern Connecticut was initially placed under New Haven County's control in 1722. It was later transferred to Hartford County in 1738. In 1751, all of northern Connecticut was incorporated into the new Litchfield County. Two additional counties were added to the U.S. state of Connecticut in 1785: Tolland, and Middlesex. The modern Hartford County was largely a result of this. The boundaries of Hartford County were slightly altered by the addition of several towns in the late 18th century and early 19th centuries. The modern boundaries were finally established on May 8, 1806, when Canton was founded.
