About Clark County, Nevada

The United States acquired Clark County during the Mexican-American War. It became part of the northern corner of New Mexico Territory. Jefferson Hunt, a Mormon Battalion member returning from Los Angeles in 1847, pioneered a wagon road through the County that would become the Mormon Road. This road was named the "Southern Route" in 1849. It was the winter route for the California Trail that ran from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles during California's Gold Rush. The route now called the Salt Lake Road in California and the California Road, Utah Territory, was used to trade wagons between the two. The Mormons established Las Vegas as a settlement in the middle of the 1850s. Mormon colonies were established on the Virgin and Muddy Rivers in the 1860s.

The entire county was once part of Mohave County in Arizona Territory. This Territory was established in 1863 before Nevada was made a state. It was made part of Pah Ute County, Arizona Territory in 1865. In 1866, the new State of Nevada was given the Pah-Ute County portion north and west of the Colorado River. However, Arizona Territory fought the division until 1871. Pah-Ute County was made part of Lincoln County, and the westernmost portion became Nye County's southernmost.
