Aurora was named "City of Lights" in 1908. This is because it was the first American city to install an all-electric streetlight system in 1881. The historic center of Aurora is on the Fox River, centered around Stolp Island. The city can be divided into three areas: the West Side is on the west bank of Fox River; the East Side is between Kane/DuPage County and the Fox River's eastern bank, and the Far East Side/Fox Valley is located from the County Line to Naperville's eastern border.
Some of the most notable architecture in the Aurora area includes structures by Frank Lloyd Wright and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Aurora also houses over 50 Sears Catalog Homes as well seven Lustron all-steel homes. Downtown Aurora is home to the Hollywood Casino Aurora. It's a dockside gambling facility that has 53,000 square feet and 1200 gaming positions.
