About Kanawha County, West Virginia

The Virginia General Assembly authorized the formation of the county on November 14, 1788. It was then established on October 5, 1789. Named after the Kanawha River which was in turn named after a Native American tribe who lived in the region, the county was founded on October 5, 1789. A number of state cavalry and infantry regiments were formed in the county during the American Civil War. They served both the Union Army and Confederate Army.

With the intent of encouraging local government, West Virginia's counties were split into civil townships in 1863. In the rural state of West Virginia, this was not feasible so in 1872 the townships became magisterial districts. Kanawha County was split into ten districts: Big Sandy and Cabin Creek; Charleston, Elk Jefferson, Loudon, and Malden. Poca, Union, Washington. The historic districts were combined into five new magisterial districts: District 1, District 2, and District 3. District 4 was added, and District 5. In the 1980s, District 6 was established. However, the county was redistricted in the 1990s. The number of the magisterial district was reduced to just four.
