Salt brines were discovered near the Kanawha River in the early 19th century. The first salt well was drilled by the Kanawha River in 1806. The area experienced a boom and great economic growth. In 1808, 1250 pounds of salt were being produced per day. The world's largest salt producer would be Malden, Kanawha Salines (now Malden), which is located just next to Charleston. The Kanawha Salt Company was established in 1818. It is the first trust in America.
Captain James Wilson discovered natural gas when he was drilling for salt. He did this in 1815. It was drilled on the spot that is now Kanawha Boulevard and Brooks Street. The first coal discovery was made in 1817. It gradually became the fuel for salt works. After 1861, the Kanawha salt industry lost its importance. Then came World War I which brought about a need for chemical products. These chemicals were sodium hydroxide and chlorine, which could also be made from salt brine.
