The United States Army, under the command of Anthony Wayne, an American Revolutionary War general, built Fort Wayne in 1794. It was the last of a series of forts near Kekionga. Wayne named the European-American settlement after Wayne. It was established at the confluence between St. Joseph, St. Marys, and Maumee rivers to serve as a trading point for pioneers. After the completion of both the Wabash and Erie Canals and the advent of the railroad, the village saw a tremendous increase in population. Fort Wayne was once a bustling manufacturing community in the Rust Belt. Today, the city's economy is based on distribution, transportation and logistics, healthcare professional and business services, leisure and hospitality, financial services, and finance. One to 2% of the city's population is employed in the defense industry.
