The United States Army, under the command of Anthony Wayne, an American Revolutionary War general, built Fort Wayne in 1794. It was the last of a series of forts near Kekionga. Wayne named the European-American settlement after Wayne. It was established at the confluence between St. Joseph, St. Marys, and Maumee rivers to serve as a trading point for pioneers.
