About Sangamon County, Illinois

Sangamon County, located in central Illinois, is well-known for its rich history as well as its natural beauty. It is home to Springfield, the state capital and also the former hometown of Abraham Lincoln. Sangamon County lies along the banks of the Sangamon River. It is bordered by several other counties including Logan, Menard, and Christian.

Sangamon County was home to the Lincoln-Douglas Debates, seven debates between Abraham Lincoln (and Stephen A. Douglas) during the 1858 Illinois senatorial election. These debates attracted thousands of people and helped Lincoln to be known as an effective orator and a staunch opponent of slavery. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield offer more information about Lincoln's life and legacy.

Many famous people have connections to Sangamon County. This includes former US President Barack Obama who was a Senator from Illinois before he became president. Other notable residents include Vachel Lindsay, John Prine, the poet, and Chester Gould the cartoonist who created the comic strip "Dick Tracy."

Sangamon County was also the location of many important historical events, including the Haymarket Riot in 1886 that took place in Springfield. This riot was caused by labor tensions and resulted in many deaths and injuries. It is a significant moment in American labor history.
