More about San Mateo County, California

San Mateo County was created in 1856 by the division of San Francisco County. This county was one of 18 originally established in California in 1850. San Francisco's boundaries extended west to Divisadero Street, Castro Street, and southward to 20th Street. The county was divided by the California state government in 1856. The tip of the San Francisco Peninsula was located north of San Bruno Mountain. A straight line was drawn. Everything to the south of this line became San Mateo County, while everything to the north became the new consolidated City and County of San Francisco. On April 18, 1857, San Mateo County was created by a bill that Senator T.G. Phelps. Phelps. In March 1868, San Mateo County annexed a portion of northern Santa Cruz County, including Pescadero.
