In 1827, Captain Frederick William Beechey was traveling with the hills to their right, also known as the Sierra del Sur. They began to approach the road which, after passing over a small eminence opened up upon "a wide country, meadow land, with clusters, fine oak, free from underwood... It looked like a park for noblemen: horses and cattle were roaming the rich pasture. Many fallow-deer were alerted by strangers and fled to the hills in search of safety. This area is called San Matheo and belongs to San Francisco's mission.
The Spanish colonists documented San Mateo as part of Rancho de las Pulgas in 1856.
