​​SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) is a web-based system administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The system maintains real-time information about international students, exchange visitors, and their dependents while they are in the United States. Educational institutions use SEVIS to issue Forms I-20 to international students. SEVIS also helps the U.S. government monitor students’ enrollment status, academic progress, and compliance with visa regulations. The system creates a unique SEVIS identification number for each student, which appears on their Form I-20 and remains with them throughout their academic career in the United States.
One of the first steps of applying for a U.S. student visa is paying the SEVIS fee. In fact, if you do not pay the SEVIS fee, you will not be able to attend the visa interview and your application will be rejected. As soon as you complete payment, keep your receipt as proof during your visa interview. As of December 2024, the current SEVIS fee ranges between $220-$250, depending on the type of student visa. Students participating in a summer program or camp counselor program may be eligible for a lower SEVIS fee of $35. The fee is non-refundable, even if your visa is ultimately denied. However, it is important to note that students applying for a visa renewal do not need to pay the fee again if continuing in the same program.
