Police misconduct is rife in the USA. It is not only something that has been happening since the beginnings of the police for due to racism, sexism, homophobia, and other prejudices, it is something that is very much present today and continuously making the news. People are dying in situations where they are unarmed and even in their own home. It is so prevalent in the USA that the Department of Justice (DOJ) published a document that addresses police misconduct and explains how you can file a complaint with the DOJ if you believe that your rights have been violated. According to the DOJ, “Federal laws that address police misconduct include both criminal and civil statutes. These laws cover the actions of State, county, and local officers, including those who work in prisons and jails. In addition, several laws also apply to Federal law enforcement officers. The laws protect all persons in the United States (citizens and non-citizens).” Police have immunity in many cases and are hardly brought to justice for committing actions that have serious and harmful repercussions.
