Stop and ID states are states that give the police the authority to order people whom they reasonably suspect of committing a crime to state their name and give identification. Tennessee is technically not one of those states. Police can’t ask for identification for no reason. If they ask for identification so that they can issue a warrant or a citation, the person needs to give their ID. Failure to do so can lead to arrest.
